The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made significant strides in harnessing solar energy, establishing itself as a leader in renewable energy within the Middle East. As of November 2023, the UAE's total installed solar power capacity surpassed 5 gigawatts (GW), a substantial increase from 133 megawatts (MW) in 2014. This growth reflects the nation's commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint.
Key Solar Projects in the UAE:
Al Dhafra Solar PV Plant:
- Al Dhafra Solar PV Plant: Inaugurated in November 2023, this 2 GW plant is recognized as the world's largest single-site solar power facility. Constructed in a single phase, Al Dhafra significantly bolsters the UAE's renewable energy capacity.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park:
- Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park: Located approximately 50 kilometers south of Dubai, this expansive project aims to generate 5 GW of renewable energy by 2030. The park incorporates both photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies, with multiple phases contributing to its growth since its inception in 2012.
Noor Abu Dhabi:
- Noor Abu Dhabi: Operational since April 2019, Noor Abu Dhabi is one of the world's largest standalone solar plants, boasting a capacity of 1.2 GW. Situated in Sweihan, Abu Dhabi, the facility comprises over 3.3 million solar panels and plays a pivotal role in supplying clean energy to the region.
Masdar City Solar Photovoltaic Plant:
- Masdar City Solar Photovoltaic Plant: Commissioned in 2009, this 10 MW plant was the UAE's first grid-connected renewable energy project and, at the time, the largest in the Middle East. It produces approximately 17,500 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, offsetting around 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

In January 2025, Masdar announced a groundbreaking $6 billion facility designed to produce 1 GW of uninterrupted renewable energy.
